SIPLACE Tip of the Month

by Christoph Oeckl,
Manager SIPLACE Application Center Munich

During my everyday work at the SIPLACE Application Center in Munich I often get asked by electronics manufacturers to tell them more about the many features of our SIPLACE software tools. They are particularly interested in hearing about tips and tricks that will make their daily operations easier. Today I would like to share some of these useful tips with you.

SIPLACE Pro:
Using collinearity measurements to sort out damaged components

"During my daily work with customers I often get interesting information about proplems which occure during real production. One challenge my customers have to face often are damaged connectors, because components frequently arrive with bent leads. They represent an unwelcome source of errors in the placement process, because they are difficult to identify without vision tools, and electrical tests take place when it is too late. With SIPLACE placement machines running SIPLACE station software version 605.3 and 703 or higher and SIPLACE Pro version 8 or higher, my customers get a handle on this challenge, because they check the collinearity of each component by default."
"With the 2D component camera and the SIPLACE vision system, the system checks all leads and their distance from the regression line or a line that is parallel to the measured component angle via a user-defined limit value. Since bent or damaged leads appear as shorter or longer on the 2D image, the system can recognize them in a timely manner and remove them from the placement process. This reduces the rate of failures caused by damaged components considerably. As a special benefit, the collinearity measurements don't take up any extra time, because the vision system computes the positions and dimensions of the leads anyway when it checks each component."

"What's even better for my customers: the collinearity measurement feature does not cost extra. It is a helpful standard function which the user can easily access via SIPLACE Pro or the vision system. That way, reducing the reject rate for end products does not cost any extra time or money."

The collinearity measurement is easily accessible via SIPLACE Pro or the vision system. The process does not increase the production time.
